Historic Hotel Viking's Environmental Policy
The Hotel Viking is a role model for businesses in Newport County that are trying to initiate green practices in existing buildings. The Hotel Viking was one of 32 companies to receive DEM-approved Green Certification on Earth Day. The following outlines the green practices the hotel has employed and their overall environmental policy.
The Hotel Viking is an environmentally conscious hotel. We not only aim to provide exceptional quality services for our guests, but are committed to the implementation of proactive measures to help protect and sustain the local, national and global environment for future generations. By working together we can create a safe and clean environment and ensure that environmental issues are kept at the forefront of everyone’s mind and given proper attention at all times.
Some of the steps they have taken to be ‘green’ are:
· Free parking for hybrid cars
· Use 30% recycled paper and making double sided photo copies whenever possible
· 25%-75% of our produce, dairy and meats are from Rhode Island farms and our seafood aligns with sustainable recommendations
· 75%-100% of our salmon is wild, not farm raised
· Use green seal certified chemicals and biodegradable detergents that contain no phosphates
· Recycle fluorescent light bulbs, paper, cardboard, toner and ink jet cartridges
· Eliminated the use of Styrofoam throughout the hotel
· Recycle used cooking oil with a biodiesel company
· Adopted a water conservation policy for guest room laundry
· Upgraded all toilets to be 1.6 gallons per flush
· Use compact fluorescent light bulbs in guest rooms and wherever possible
· Compliant with the RI Diesel Engine Anti-Idling Act
· Grow herbs for use in all food and beverage outlets
· Installed programmable thermostats
· Formed Environmental Committee that meets regularly
It is important to note that the Hotel Viking aims to exceed any environmental legislation and has a genuine desire to protect our environment. Employees are encouraged to practice this philosophy of minimizing environmental impact outside of work and to engage with the local community on environmental awareness.
