Hurrah for farmers' markets!

I'm so excited this week because one of my favorite summer activities in Newport County is starting this weekend - the farmers markets!! My bike is polished and ready to take me to pick out delicious rhubarb, asparagus, eggs and so much more!

I think that we all know by now that farmers' markets often feature produce grown naturally or organically, meats that are raised humanely on pasture, handmade farmstead cheeses, eggs and poultry from free-range fowl, as well as heirloom produce, and since locally-grown produce does not travel as far to get to your table, the difference in mileage saves fossil fuels.

We are very lucky to have a few farmers markets in the area. There is the Aquidneck Growers Market which is probably the largest, it takes place every Wednesday, from 2pm - 6pm on Memorial Boulevard right in downtown Newport and again on Saturday from 9am-1pm at Newport Vineyards.

There is also the Middletown / Aquidneck Grange which takes place on Tuesdays from 2pm - 6pm in Middletown at the Aquidneck Grange and also a Portsmouth farmers market that is at the Green Grocer on Friday afternoons.

Another large market is the Sakonnet Growers' Market which takes place at Pardon Gray Preserve in Tiverton on Saturdays also from 9am - 1pm.

All of these are a great way to get a taste of the local flavor, get to know your nearby farmers and support the local agricultural community. Hope to see you there!
